Why Lighting Matters in Closet Design

In this article
Lighting is the jewelry of the closet. In many Cumming, GA builder-grade homes, the closet gets one dim overhead bulb. Upgrading lighting is a key part of our 2026 design trends.
Ribbon LED Lighting
We route channels into the vertical side panels of your custom closet to house LED strips. This casts light inward onto your clothes, not just on the floor. While adding lighting impacts the overall cost, the functionality is worth it.
Warm vs. Cool Light
We recommend 3000K-3500K warm white lighting for closets. It renders skin tones naturally and helps you coordinate colors accurately.
Cool white light (5000K–6500K) creates a clinical atmosphere and distorts warm fabric tones — a burgundy blouse can read as navy under the wrong color temperature. If your closet connects to a bathroom with cooler lighting, consider adding a dimmer switch so you can fine-tune the ambiance depending on the time of day and what you're doing.
Motion-Activated vs. Always-On
For walk-in closets, always-on lighting controlled by a wall switch is the most practical setup. For reach-in closets with bi-fold or sliding doors, a door-activated switch — similar to a refrigerator light — or a passive infrared motion sensor makes more sense. You shouldn't have to reach around the door to flip a switch every morning before you can see what you're grabbing.
We wire our LED systems to your existing closet switch circuit in most builds. In homes where there is no switch near the closet, we offer battery-powered motion sensor options that install without any electrical work. Both configurations are discussed during your design consultation so you end up with the right solution for your space.
Why Placement Beats Brightness
A single bright overhead bulb creates harsh downward shadows that make it hard to distinguish colors and see items on lower shelves. Lighting routed along the vertical side panels of your shelving towers casts light horizontally across your clothes — illuminating fabric and color the way a well-designed boutique does. For drawers and lower shelves, we often add under-shelf LED strips so every level of your closet is equally lit. The result is a space that functions as a true dressing room, not just a storage box with a lightbulb.
