How to Choose the Right Closet Materials

In this article
At Cumming Closets, we primarily use high-grade thermal-fused melamine. Why? Because it's engineered for durability. This material choice is a key factor in calculating custom closet costs.
Why Not Solid Wood?
Solid wood warps with humidity (a big issue in Cumming and Alpharetta summers) and is prohibitively expensive for large shelving units. Melamine is stable, scratch-resistant, and looks incredible. It's a superior choice to many prefab wire systems.
Finish Options
- Solid Colors: Clean, bright, and timeless finish with a modern look. Most budget-friendly option.
- Solid Wood Look: Soft woodgrain look that adds warmth and a more classic appearance.
- Premium Wood Grains: Rich, realistic wood finishes that create a high-end luxury closet feel.
Hardware: Where Quality Shows
The material of your shelving panels is only half the story. The shelf pins, drawer slides, and rod holders are what you touch hundreds of times a year — and they're where budget systems show their age first. We use metal shelf pins rated for 75 lbs per shelf, undermount soft-close drawer slides, and chrome or matte black rod holders depending on your finish choice. These details eliminate the rattling, sagging, and sticking that characterize prefab closet hardware over time.
For hanging rods, we use 1-inch diameter polished or satin chrome steel — not the hollow aluminum rods that bow under a full load of winter coats. Each rod is supported at no more than 36-inch intervals with center supports, which maintains straightness for the life of the system. This level of hardware specification is what separates a custom closet that lasts 20 years from one that needs to be replaced in five.
Making Your Final Decision
We bring physical finish samples to your home during the consultation — not just swatches, but full-sized panels so you can see how the color reads in your room's natural and artificial light. Most clients narrow their choice to two or three options during the consultation, then make their final pick after seeing the samples in place overnight. Choosing a finish is a long-term decision, and we want you to be completely confident before production begins. There is no pressure to decide on the spot.
