Reach-In Closet Makeover Guide: Maximize Small Spaces

Most standard bedrooms in Cumming and Alpharetta come with a single wire shelf and rod. This leaves about 50% of the closet space wasted. Here's how to fix it, similar to our small bedroom layouts recommendations.
The "Double Hang" Strategy
By removing the single rod and installing two levels of hanging rods (one at 40" and one at 80"), you instantly double your hanging capacity for shirts, pants, and skirts.
Adding Shelves for Shoes
Floor space in a reach-in closet is often a cluttered mess of shoes. We recommend a vertical stack of 12" deep shelves down the center or side of the closet specifically for footwear and folded knits. Check out our top accessories for more organizational ideas.
Getting the Configuration Right
The most common mistake in reach-in closet design is treating all hanging space the same. A full-width rod at 66 inches works for shirts but wastes the bottom 36 inches beneath pants. Instead, think in zones: double-hang on one side for shirts and folded pants (at 40" and 80"), a center tower for shoes and folded items, and a single-hang section of at least 20 inches for dresses and blazers.
For a standard 6-foot-wide reach-in, we typically allocate 30 inches to double-hang, 16 inches to a center shelf tower, and 26 inches to single-hang. That configuration stores roughly three times as many items as the original rod-and-shelf setup while leaving the floor completely clear. A clear floor is important in a reach-in — it makes the closet feel twice as large and makes vacuuming effortless.
If you have a bi-fold door, measure the door swing clearance before finalizing any interior configuration. Shelves installed too close to the door frame will catch the door and limit access. We account for door type in every reach-in design — it's a detail that's easy to overlook but impossible to ignore once the system is in.
