Built-In Storage for Laundry Rooms and Mudrooms

In this article
Georgia red clay belongs outside, not on your rugs. A functional mudroom is the first line of defense for a clean Cumming, GA home. Complement your organized entryway with a structured pantry for total home flow.
The "Drop Zone"
Every family member needs a designated locker or hook. We design custom benches with shoe storage underneath and hooks above for backpacks and coats.
Laundry Efficiency
Add a folding counter over your front-loaders and install upper cabinets for detergent storage. It turns a chore into a pleasure. Consider adding tilt-out hampers to hide dirty clothes.
Choosing the Right Materials for Wet Spaces
Laundry rooms and mudrooms see more humidity and foot traffic than any other storage space in the home. Standard particleboard shelving absorbs moisture and delaminates within a few years in Georgia's climate. We use thermal-fused melamine for all of our mudroom and laundry builds — it's moisture-resistant, easy to wipe down, and holds up to the kind of daily abuse these rooms see.
For mudroom benches, we recommend a solid surface top rather than a melamine-wrapped panel. It withstands backpacks being dropped and wet gear sitting on it without showing wear. Hooks should be rated for at least 25 lbs each — heavier winter coats and overstuffed bags will test anything lighter.
Bench Heights and Family Lockers
Bench height matters more than most homeowners expect. A seat height of 17 to 19 inches lets adults and older children sit comfortably to swap shoes, while the cubby depth beneath should be at least 14 inches to fit adult footwear without stacking. For larger families, we often design a "family locker" system — each household member gets a vertical cabinet column with a hook rail, a shelf for their bag, and a cubby below for shoes. Backpacks go up, shoes go down, and the entryway stays clear.
For laundry rooms, the folding counter height should match your specific washer and dryer model — typically between 34 and 36 inches. We also recommend at least 24 inches of clear counter depth so you have room to fold a full king sheet without it falling off the edge. Upper cabinets should sit no higher than 54 inches from the floor so they're genuinely accessible without a step stool.
