Planning Your Small Closet Layout
Before finalizing any layout, measure your actual wardrobe. Count your short-hang items (shirts, folded pants, skirts), your long-hang items (dresses, suits, coats), your folded items (sweaters, jeans), and your shoes. The ratio of these four categories determines your optimal configuration far more reliably than any standard template.
In a 6-foot-wide reach-in closet, the most versatile layout is: one side for double-hang short items, a center tower of four or five shelves for folded items and shoes, and at least 24 inches of single-hang space for long items on the other side. This layout typically triples usable capacity compared to a single rod across the full width — which is how most builder closets arrive.
If the closet is shallower than 24 inches, hanging items will brush the door. In that case, we often recommend converting the space entirely to open shelving and using the bedroom wall for a freestanding wardrobe or armoire for hanging.
